Holy Smokes
This is like three songs in one. The first part is fast and rough with a female voice singing "broken and juiced" with wonderful angst and sexuality. It just made me want to scream out "GOOD GOD YALL!" in my best James Brown voice. I mean this girl (in the song) has been rode hard and put up wet. I can really feel the absolute loneliness she's experiencing. Then we get a break from the madness and what I percieve as her male counterpart's rebuttal of "listen to all the lies you've said to me". But wait, it's not over yet. Next comes a wonderful instrumental filled with a banjo, harmonica, some slide and guitar which for me is the signal that everything is gonna be alright between these two tortured souls as they walk down a dark alley hanging on to each other. If these two singers aren't lovers in real life then they should be. The harmonies meld together wonderfully. The segway to each segment is great. At least that's my take on it. Nicely done guys, keep it up.

Epic
Let's start with the fact that it takes balls of steel to upload a nearly eight minute song for the notroiously "attention-deficit" garageband.com crew to review. I admit I probably groaned audibly when the time indicator popped up.

But, then I was catapulted into the song by that lovely acoustic guitar and the harmonics, and we were off . .
This song builds nicely up to the "So Alone" line.

An interesting call and response type of vocal in the first segment. Very tight. The female voice particularly is wonderfully racked with emotion, she seems like she would be confortable in many different genres. Overall the music itself and the performance particularly were very strong

An interesting cross pollenation of styles. There are elements of a lot of different styles at work here

The banjo and harp passage was particularly delightful then the dobro slides in and the mood is painted wonderfully.

The weakness, (if there was one) I felt was in the lyrics. With an obvious attempt at something truly epic, here . . . a few of the phrases seemed a little contrived; ie. "feeling so abused".

I didn't care too much for the dischordant vocal slide at around 3:07. Other than that, it's an extrordinary effort, and I'm very excited to hear more from this band. Good luck!

Nice start
The two vocalists work well together.
Very retro. And very long. Inagodadavida. A banjo get out.
we're pulling out some spots here. From punk to folk country. Gotta addimt it made me smile. Sounds like you had fun recording this. Lots of talent here. Almost turned it off after the first 2 mins. But just had to hang on when the banjo thing kicked in. Odd but fun.

a journey
the song has many different parts to it and i'm sure if they fit?

i guess the song seems to take the listener on a journey...at first it has feel or resemblance to mixing two songs, heart's barracuda and golden earrings radar love...then it takes you into a different feel or even different song give you a laid back feeling?

the bands performance is good and vocals are on/off pitch at times...

personally i don't get what the band is going for and clocking in at 7:42 it's hard to hold a persons attention - keep going...

Where have you guys been?
I have been looking for this style of music for some time. You guys are musically interesting, the contrasting voices are good. Instrumentation is awesome, well recorded. I am a huge Rusted Root fan and have been looking for more music in that realm with little luck. Thank you. You guys have your own sound within the genre.

I do some engineering, and am going to put on that hat for a second, if you don't mind. I don't nitpick bad stuff, but this may or may not help you. First, the acoustic rhythm guitar's driving beat is awesome, but the looseness of it sounds like a demo while the rest of the recording is much more professional. It sounds like it needs click track. Maybe it does, since the more orchestrated sections are pretty much dead on.
Also, this particular song stretches pretty wide, and I think would be great as part of an album but probably doesn't sit by itself as a single. It's almost several mini-songs in one.

Great job. My fave so far.

Hypnotic
I like stuff like this, because it's soooo different from what's out there! Like how you put the male and female together. The drums in the background adding to the guitar rhythm is very hypnotic! Lovin' it!!!
- snowhite29 from Long Beach, California on 17May2006

annoying
the male vs. female vocals were just laughable... the concept could have worked but here it was just corny. the riff was annoying and not melodic. this isnt folk rock... more like bluegrass, folk, or country.
- mct1115 from Los Angeles, California on 15May2006

Very good song
Has a very organic sound, and rocks like a mother. The harmonies are really tight. The mix is also very good. You can hear what everyone is doing. Good structure to the song. Nice change in the feel around 2:40. Banjos are always fun. Another nice change at 4:00.

Interesting
Definitlely need to listen to this one a few times. I feel like there's a bit of identity crisis going in, in that it starts with very indie rock alternative feel, then the banjo kicks in and it takes onn a country jaunt. The musicianship is good all around (harmonies could be played with a little), and rhythm and feel are good, i'd just like to see some solid passion - at times the song lulls, even in the hip jam at the end. Maybe adding in a repeating hook that brings the whole song together would give it a more cohesive feel. Good song overall, very enjoyable.

Sorry this is long...
You get the award for longest song I've listened to.

I wondered at first how this was going to keep my attention for over seven and a half minutes. But then I found out very quickly how it would do it - the vocals.

The music is good - it's got purpose and direction. That is, it's not just there to provide accompaniment. It's got attitude that allows the vocalists to build on top of it.

Like the change at 2:07 or so - the harmonies after this change are OK for me - I thought the OOHs would continue of the vocals there a little more. They do a little, but things aren't quite as tight vocally though here as I think they could be.

The banjo is a nice addition to make things a little different - also with the harmonica and country-twang sound. It all adds texture. But this could be almost another song.

I'd hate to suggest cutting the song down if you're really attatched to it - I bet when played live, it gives the players opporunities to solo and improvise, which to musicians is a welcome thing.

In this modern world of three-minute songs that are over before they can grow, I applaud you for giving this a chance to mature.

I actually thought the song went by pretty quickly. There's a lot of character here, which makes things exciting and interesting.

Good tune. Keep up the work. Love the harmonica outro.

crosby, stills nash and young meet heart
ok first of all your vocals are very nice.great voice.i'm sorry but i kept hearing the song baracuda by heart, not saying you copied but maybe inspired by the group heart.on a brighter not guitar work sounded really good.it put me in mind of one of my favorite guitarists, neil young.again harmonica was awsome towards the end.infact the whole arrangement instrument wise.
- gsa00021 from Herold, West Virginia on 10May2006

All over the place - but not in a bad way
I think I would just skip the harmonics at the beginning and get right into the strumming, which has some good energy to it. Nice voices, both of them. The composition is good. I really like the way it builds with the bass coming in at :30, but I'm afraid the levels on the recording kind of steal away from the effect they were going for there. The structures are surprisingly dynamic and interesting - the only common thread throughout being the singing. The harmonies starting at 2:26 are really cool. Hey, a banjo (3:40)! Wow, this song is all over the place! I actually think it would lose most people. You might be better off splitting it into several songs, or trimming it down and sticking to this version for live performances. (7:42 is a little long anyway) But I for one found it interesting and well-played.
- jbscrap from Helena, Montana on 10May2006

nice song
probly no commercial airtime because of the length. i enjoyed the beat and guitars. the vocals were great. overall i enjoyed this song. nice breaks and changes through out.
- Southbound69 from Unspecified on 9May2006

still going . . .
if this song has two vocalists, they blend so well together that it leaves me guessing . . . one or two? this is a very emotional song. its kind of repetitive. the higher vocal line is very good. there exists some interesting vocalization in this song. the song is really long for the amount of lyrics. hmmm . . . here comes the banjo. i'm starting to like this better. it gets a little country about half way through. i definately like the feel of it at this point. i wish there were some good lyrics and melody to go along with this very cool portion of the song. i am left wondering if the song's writer has multiple personalities. what's happening here? well, i like the second half of the song quite a bit. the first half was . . .weird.
- jenbluhm from Minneapolis, Minnesota on 9May2006

dead good
together. this is going somewhere. it keeps me listening, even though i was rather worried by the 7.42 length. arcade fire springs to mind. dead good.
- QatarLa from Liverpool / Doha on 8May2006

Nice vocal
The female vocal is lovely. I like that breathy voice. The drums are bad though. Not the playing but the sound and level. It needs to be more punchy and the timing seems to change a bit. This song needs to be tightened up and I think it'd be excellent.
- Apollo_Creed from Dublin, Ireland on 8May2006

Nice
Reminds me a lot of Heart. A very rocking track. Love the melody that comes in around 1:20 or so and then progresses from there. Hmmm not sure how it changes around 2:30 or so. I like the idea, I'd want to hear a really creepy drawn out lead over it. The vocal lines are interesting.

Haha! Banjo! Wasn't expecting that. That's great! This part is really awesome. I think the only thing you guys and gals need to work on is how you change from one part of the music to the next. A bit on the choppy side. There's definitely too many great melodies and what not within the song for it to be bad though. The instruments compliment each other so well. Very good.

Awesome song! Love the way it just jams!
- CladInDarkness from Chicago, Illinois on 7May2006

A keeper in there somewhere
This isn't really a song, but an anthology. Too long to keep my interest up. If I could pick the best part out, it would be the instrumental that started around the four minute mark. It had a nice rolling flow and a very nice feel to it that I found both original and refreshing after being put through the first four minutes, which were tedious and boring.
- captain_mudflap from Magnolia, Texas on 7May2006

Great vocals, interesting track!
A little 'Fragile' tribute there at the beginning with the harmonics.

I like the back and forth between the two vocalists. The female vocalist has a great sounding voice. I would definitely listen to this band some more just to hear her voice.

The harmonies are good. Nice dynamic changes. I love the intro of the banjo and the harmonica.

The song changes it up nicely and there is no repetition, however, it goes on a little long and could be carefully trimmed to make the whole song better. On the other hand, I can see you were aiming for a totally different ending, and cutting it short would make it hard to pull this off. A 7:42 song may limit audiences at least in terms of radio play.

Definitely write songs that showcase the female vocalist... This would be a fun band to see live!
- mkogon from Toronto, Ontario, Canada on 7May2006

Pretty Good
It was pretty good, id get some more interesting guitar, great vocal range, very powerful, makes it seem very raw,and stripped down, maybe try performing it, electric with a clean setting

Good job with the harmonics.

Very interesting vocal line. I rarely like stuff like this but it works for me.

I think these two singers compliment each other well. She has a really nice voice. I like it alot. Sounds like she could sing a variety of genres.

I like the groove when it kicks in. Very nice. I'm glad it doesn't but I could hear this song rocking out with electrics too. It would lose it's uniqueness though.

There are some shades of Heart.

Nice job!

GREAT SONG
THIS IS A GREAT SONG WITH COOL SOUL AND FEELING..

GOOD LUCKS TO ALL
GOOD VOCALS
- SOULHEADS from Unspecified on 5May2006

4 Tracks in 1
The first 2 minutes of this track are quite unique in what I feel is a western style music mixed with 60's psycodelic rock vocals. Very simple lyrics that make a statement. The vocalist compliment each and harmonize well together. The next 1 1/2 minutes seem to have no virtual connection to the first section. Then we have an instrumental section which I would have to say is simple and ordinary. The last minute returns with more vocals but again the lyrics have no connection.
After the first 2 minutes (which had my attention) I became lost in the direction the band was going, seeming to have 4 different songs tied into one. This probably would be fine having played in a local establishment live where a band could run several songs together.
Personally I would go with the first section and perfect it a little further.

NEW! Signature Reviews from Garageband.com

WOW!! I am not real impressed with many bands I review here but yours blew me away. I was suprised because I don't usually like this genre of music. After i reviewed "With the Leaves" I started making all kinds of plans for this song! Like how it would be great music to play for my husband during a romantic dinner or how nice it would be to hear during a country drive or even just a bubble bath! lol
It has a definate mood to it. I am sending you a friend request on MySpace too. I think you really have talent and it's good to hear originality in a world of cookie cutter tunes.

Rock on!
